When it comes to grain storage and handling, having the right infrastructure in place is essential for producers to maintain quality, prevent loss, and enhance overall efficiency. However, the cost of purchasing new bins can be significant. Thankfully, there are funding options available that can help producers make these investments.

The On-Farm Efficiency Program (OFEP) in Alberta provides funding to producers for improving energy efficiency in grain handling.

Eligible Equipment Upgrades:

Grain handling system components that significantly improve energy efficiency above standard configuration help reduce energy use and costs on farms. These components can be factory options on new equipment or retrofits installed on existing equipment.

  • Enclosed dryer roofs/top covers, automatic moisture controllers, high-efficiency burners, VSDs for motors, grain dryer PTO-to-electric motor conversions.
  • Insulated plenums, exhaust air recirculation systems, heat exchangers, gravity-fill roofs.
  • Electrical/gas submeters, temperature/moisture monitoring cables, thermostats, indirect-fired dryers, automated bin fan systems.

Funding: 50% cost-share up to $100,000 per applicant. Minimum application: $500.

Ineligible Items: Aeration fans, ducts, conveyors, hopper bins, standard grain dryers, leased equipment, software, installation costs (unless pipeline-related).

Eligibility:

  • Primary producers in Alberta earning $25,000+ annually, responsible for input costs.
  • Must have a current Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) completed within 10 years.
